Message to Mustaqbal Website From Mr Ahmed Sayeed
Nadeem Qureshi's Response
Dear Sayeed Saheb,
Thank you for your thoughtful message. You are right. Somewhere along the road we took a wrong turn. The specter of parochialism raised its head. We are still paying the price.
Why did it happen? I'm not sure I know. What I do know is that our parents and grandparents went through a travail that one would not wish on one's enemies. The pain, suffering and sacrifice to achieve this land - Pakistan - ranks high amongst the tragedies of history. And in the vanguard of those who sacrificed everything they had were the people you refer to as 'Hindustani'. They left everything behind in pursuit of a dream. Little did they know that the dream was to become a nightmare.
That many of these wonderful selfless people - both who were native to this land, and those who came from without - were unable later to stop the catastrophic slide into parochialism remains a mystery. But it is not for us - handed our homeland on a silver platter - to sit in judgment of those who delivered it to us. They have done their bit. Now we have to do ours.
I have never thought of myself as anything other than a Pakistani. I have never considered provincial or linguistic affiliation in judging people. The sole criterion has been, and remains, sincerity and competence, period. This simple core value stands irrevocably at the heart of our movement.
If parochialism is in our past and our present, it does not have to be in our future. We, you and I, and the thousands who are now part of this movement can end it.
And we will.
Regards
Nadeem
